Did Jay Gatsby really win war medals?

In the Great Gatsby, did Jay Gatsby, or James Gatz, really win a medal of valor at Montenegro, or did Gatsby just tell this to Nick to impress him. Did he really fight in the Great War (WWI now), or did he lie about that, too?
